A fourteen year old boy drowned over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, San Ignacio Police visited the Macal River area between the Hawksworth Bridge and the board bridge where the body of 14-year-old Johnahan Requena was seen lying face up on the side of the river.
Police say that earlier that day at about 1:30p.m. Requena along with his 16-year-old friend went swimming in the Macal River on the San Ignacio side by the boat wharf.
The friend reported that while there swimming he saw when Requena jumped into the water and immediately saw him began struggling and going under as he fought to stay above water. He said that he swam into the water in an effort to help him but his efforts were unsuccessful.
That is when he saw a young man jump into the river and dragged Requena out of the water to the Santa Elena side of the river edge, where he noticed that Requena was not breathing.

E look like praably he mih dih do that nobody neva mih dih pay he mind this time. Right now, hihn 14; da e birthday nex mont, e ahn 15. He mih like e boxing, e mih dih into sports like e footballand stuf. E mih dih study, but right ya I guess eneva do that good, but e mih ready fuh go bac da school this year. E mih do do partime job; e mih dih help out and stuff. E ma hav wa bizniz; e mih dih helpa wid the bizniz and stuff”.
The men who pulled him out, did CPR on Requena, and then called the police. The body of Jonathan Requena was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
