On Sunday January 4 at about 7:00p.m., shots were fired on Costa Rica Street Extension in the Salvapan Area of Belmopan. 19 year old Kevin Vasquez was shot to the head, chest and leg.
Mr Vasquez was a Honduran welder of Chile Street, Belmopan City.
We spoke to Officer in charge of the Belmopan formation, Howell Gillett, who told us more about the incident and the investigation.
“So far, our investigation shows the person might have been hit by a .38 revolver that was found on the scene. Three expended shells were found inside the .38 revolver, and three live rounds.
The person, Mr Mark Conorquie, of the same area, reported that earlier he had a struggle with a person known to him as Kevin Vasquez, the now deceased. Upon arrival the deceased produced a gun and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, three of the shots that I have mentioned earlier were fired, and the deceased succumbed to those injuries.
Just to update the public, he has previous charges. I don’t know of any conviction, but he had at least two charges that I know of, one for kidnapping, another for attempted murder, and recently he was named in a robbery here in Belmopan. I think it was on the 25th of December.”
The body of Kevin Vasquez was transported to the Western Regional Hospital ,where it was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have since detained the 31-year-old man and another 19-year-old, both of Belmopan City, as investigations continue, though police say they are not treating it as a murder.
