21-year-old Omar Barahona, a resident of Cotton Tree Village, was planning on starting a new life in the United States of America. On Saturday night, a farewell party was held in his honour, where family and friends were gathered to say good-bye to him and wish him well on his new journey. However, Barahona’s dream of starting a new life would never become a reality as he was shot and killed right outside the house where they were celebrating his farewell. According to police reports, sometime after 10:00 p.m. Saturday night, in Cotton Tree Village, Barahona was talking with 20-year-old Devon Brooks and two other persons, outside the gathering were the celebration was being held, when a tall slim male of fair complexion with dreads walk up to them and pull out a 9mm pistol and fired several shots in their direction. The cousin of Baharona, who spoke to us off camera, told us more about that fateful night.
Cousin of Omar Barahona, Witness: We mi the chill pan the roadside, two on the corner and two on the other corner. Omar, deceased, was in his own corner leaning up on a cycle he and a next dude. Then me and the target man who they came for was on the side chilling, we weren’t paying attention to the background. As I looked up I saw a man coming. He came laughing like he knew us so I didn’t really say anything. Then the man said, “So da what the happen with uno?” Then after that the man flinch and grab his gun then after that Devon grabbed me cause looks like he already knew what was happening. If it wasn’t because of him I probably would of got shot. I jumped on the ground, then the first two shots that went off caught him in his knee then he ended up escaping. Now my cousin was left leaning up on the cycle. Look like he got scared when he heard the first two shots and he couldn’t move so now the gunman knows he didn’t catch his target so first shot he got my cousin in the head, looks like that was what killed him. Then look like he still came over and shot him four times in his back. After I got up I saw my cousin on the ground dead in a pool of blood.
Barahona received several gunshot wounds to his head and body and succumbed to his injuries while Brooks received one single gunshot wound to his left leg. Belmopan OC, Superintendent Howell Gillett, spoke about the investigation, saying they are looking for a suspect. .
Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding Belmopan Branch: Our officers processed the scene and a number of expended shells were recovered from the scene. We have a suspect that we’re looking for. We’re trying very hard to locate this person who we believe might have been responsible for the incident. In that incident unfortunately mister Barahona died, Mister Brooks is recuperating as we speak. I believe we have have a good understanding of what transpired on that night and our investigators continue to do their part to bring closure to this case. I believe that if this suspect who I alluded to earlier, that if he is brought in to our custody, we’ll have a better understanding of what happened that night.
