3 years plus $10,000 for sack of weed

38-year-old Ernie V. Zelaya, a taxi driver of Belize City, was arrested and charged for Drug Trafficking. On Saturday afternoon, police were conducting a check point in front of the Hattieville Police Station. They observed a grey car that was heading in the direction of Belize City, make a right turn into Ysaguirre Boulevard when the driver apparently saw the checkpoint. Police gave chase and the car was later intercepted. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a brown sack in the trunk which contained 23.335 kilograms of cannabis. As a result, Zelaya was arrested and charged for Drug Trafficking.   This morning, Zelaya appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser to answer to a single charge of drug trafficking. He pleaded guilty but said  that he was being forced to be a mule/carrier for someone and transport the weed when he was caught. Due to the large quantity of weed he was carrying, Zelaya had to be fined. Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser sentenced Zelaya to 3 years imprisonment and also fined him $10,000 plus a $5.00 cost of court which he has to pay by October 31, 2017 or else he will spend another 3 years in prison.
