A family in Benque Viejo town had to bury their one and only son today after he was pulled out of the Mopan River dead on Sunday March 8th. According to reports sometime after 3:00 pm on that same day 17 year old Michael Quintanilla went swimming in the Mopan River in Succotz village between
miles 72 and 73 on the George Price Highway. Authorities say Quintanilla swam towards the other side of the river but midway he went down and never resurfaced. Superintendent Daniel Arzu explained told us more.
“Benque Viejo police responded to the Mopan River at Succotz Village near the basketball court. There we observed a male person lying along the banks of the river. Information received is that prior he was socializing along with other male persons and they were bathing and as a result he submerged beneath the river and was subsequently brought up back but at that point it appears that he may have succumbed. So therefore he was taken out of the river and was put along the bank and was later transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Alfredo Quintanilla, the father
of Michael Quintanilla, remembers his 17 year old son as ambitious person much loved by his peers.
“Everything was going fine until they decided to cross back on this side of the river. However, what we believe is that he caught a cramp coming back because they had lunch a couple minutes before. Thats what the post mortem had also.”
“He said he wanted to the footsteps of his father, a soldier. A staff Sergeant actually. Then I told him I wanted him to become a pilot. We had our back and forth but at the end of the day he know what he wanted and I know he wanted to become someone important in life. “
17 year old Quintanilla was a third form student of Eden High school. His was laid to rest earlier this evening.
