The Cayo District Regional coca cola spelling bee competition was held on Tuesday April 28th at the Countryside Park in Spanish Lookout where 14 contestants, representing 7 different zones in the Cayo District competed for the first place prize and a spot at the National Competitions to be held in Corozal. It was an intense competition but in the end, Benita Caal from the Kuxlin Ha Government School in Belmopan came out victorious by spelling the word, “echidna” (pronouched ekidna). Yesterday we spoke to the Education Officer for the Belmopan Region Gwen Nuñez who gave us more details.
“We have been having our zone eliminations and yesterday, the two representatives from the various zones got together and competed to represent the Cayo District. Normally, we have three representatives; first, second and an alternate, the third. The first place wnet to Benita Caal from Kuxlin Ha. I must say that Kuxlin Ha entered the competition and they came in first. Calm and cool and very sure of herself. Benita will be joining in second place. Second place is Laura Menendez from Buena Vista Government School. Third place, the alternate in the event that something happens to the first or second place is Ronan Stewart from Sacred Heart Primary. So they head to Corozal for the National Competition which will be in Corozal on June the 15th.
