Police are investigation two separate shooting incidents occurring within three hours of each other in Belize City on Tuesday night. In the first, taking place just after 5pm, 30 year old Arturo Varela, of Antelope Street Extension was shot at several times, allegedly by two masked men. The men chased Varela inside his home from his mother in law’s yard next door. According to Police, Varela had just had an argument with his common-law wife and was leaving the house when he saw the men putting ski masks on their faces. The men kicked open his front door, chasing him into the house and shot him. Varela is now stable at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and police have detained four persons from the area as part of their investigation.
The second shooting incident took place just before 8:00 p.m. across Central American Boulevard on Pine Street. Police say 39 year old Cecil Gill and 57 year old Rafael Francisco Aquet, were walking home together from Ebony Street when they encountered a man. The man was standing at the corner of Hondo Street when he opened fired at them. Gill was hit to the nose and left foot and Aquet in the left shoulder. Both men are being treated at the KHMH. Information to PLUS News is that these men were not the intended targets of the shooting. Police investigations into both incidents continue.
