The campaign trail is on and Peoples United Party Representatives for Cayo South and Belmopan Constituencies; Julius Espat and Amin Hegar, appeared on Plus TV's Rise and Shine this morning. The men spoke about their vision and plans for their constituencies as the date of the general election draws nearer. Amin Hegar, who is contesting UDP’s incumbent John Saldivar, spoke about the current state of the Belmopan constituency as he sees it.

Amin Hegar, PUP Area Representative Candidate, Belmopan
Belmopan has long been overlooked. It is the capital; we have to be proud of the capital of Belize. It has been taken as the area where embassies come and have their offices and where people come and fix their papers, but that has to change. However the museum creates jobs; it is going to be a pride of Belmopan, to show case our archeology and our cultural activities; it won’t be the Washington type of museum, but something that we can showcase and we have a lot of archeological artifacts being stored. You can also have the National Assembly which can be another area where as a package, tourists can visit and see where the politicians discuss the progress and projects of the country and approve them. You can have a television inside the National Assembly, a meeting might not be going on there and so tourists will be able to go and see how it goes. So those things create jobs. A part from that, Belmopan has features to develop more agriculture lands, as there is land for that. A lot of people in Belmopan are agricultural orientated.

Julius will be going up against incumbent UDP area rep for Cayo South, Hon. Ramon Witz. Julius spoke on his visions and plans for the area.

Julius Espat, PUP Area Representative Candidate, Cayo South
Cayo South geographically includes the Chiquibul forest and it includes the Mountain Pine Ridge Area. It also includes some of the most beautiful caves and national monuments, such as the Blue Hole and Jaguar Paw; there are so many. So initially what needs to be done in Cayo South is a marketing plan, to be able to package Cayo South in a box, put a package around it, place your ribbon and place a name and mark Cayo South as a destination, just as how we have been marketing San Pedro and Placencia. One project that I am proposing which will also help Belmopan is the Agricultural Grounds, this is an area that is utilized once a year. For the end of the Agricultural Grounds at the entrance of Roaring Creek, the vision that I have is to design and build a cruise ship terminal. I explained to them not a cruise ship terminal that boats dock up to. In Cayo South we have the perfect location, whereas we can establish fancy bathroom facilities and fancy shops, where our people like the girls out of Teakettle that knows how to do weave baskets can be there selling their products and also the people that are artist out of Belmopan can establish their businesses there. There is a thing called cultural tourism, where someone comes to your country and it’s not necessary the tortilla that they eat; but they want to see the process of how the tortilla is made.
