As political campaigning continues, a number of candidates from all parties have made their rounds at PlusTv’s Rise and Shine to discuss relevant issues of the day and get their message out. This morning, Independent Mayoral candidate for the City of Belmopan, Marlon Skeen was guest on the show. Skeen had previously been Belmopan Mayoral candidate for Vision inspired by the people, but at the beginning of last month, Skeen stepped out from VIP and announced his plan to run as an independent. This morning, hosts of the show asked Skeen what led to that decision.

The VIP is a very well-intentioned group, but I felt as if I was wasting my time there. We had good strategy etc, but I didn’t see the commitment from them. We planned sessions to go out – no one would show up. When I jumped in with the VIP, I jumped in wholeheartedly. In fact, we started to have all the meetings at my office in my conference room. I jumped in and the first thing I did was get the shirts and the banners; I spearheaded all these things and I didn’t see anyone matching that from the group.
Skeen then spoke about his plans for the capital city. According to Skeen, he would like to bring a managerial approach to the city council and has various ideas on how to motivate persons to pay their property taxes.

Everyone in Belmopan knows the problems; they see the broken streets, the potholes, the security and they see all of these issues. It’s not that no one knows how to fix it, the problem is financing. What is Belmopan doing to generate income? This is what I bring to the table – a business mind to jump in and look at it from a business standpoint and turn Belmopan into a money making machine.
Skeen is one of two independent mayoral candidates running in Belmopan. The other is Roody Wade. Other Mayoral candidates for Belmopan are PUP’s Jorge Flores, VIP’s Paul Morgan and UDP’s Incumbent Simeon Lopez.
