Cayo Northeast nominations for General Elections
Date: Tue 21, Feb 2012 |
Nomination for General Elections took place on Friday of last week; the country was abuzz with political parties and independents rallying their supporters to come out and San Ignacio was no different. Plusnews spoke with both the Peoples United Party and United Democratic Party candidates for Cayo Northeast. We spoke firstly with Orlando Habet of the PUP.

Orlando Habet, Contesting Cayo Northeast
We are here because the people are behind us. You see our small crowd; all these people are here because they support us. There is no free fuel, there is no money given to anyone – people are here because they support us. It is a week-day and you can see the crowd that is behind us. On March 7th we are inviting everyone to come out; all the young people and all the middle age people – everyone of age that can vote - we invite you to come out and vote for the PUP. We are here behind you; the people are behind us and we will deliver. March 7th is deliverance day and the people will have their say.

Elvin Penner who is the UDP representative in Cayo Northeast says that Cayo will support the UDP again.

Elvin Penner, Contesting Cayo Northeast
I know that the Cayo District on a whole is going to be UDP. Everyone in Cayo is doing well; Witz, Saldivar, Fernandez, Contreas, Montero and myself are all working hard together. We are working together with the Mayor John August from Benque and Mayor Simeon Lopez of Belmopan. We will all do great and we will all work as a team; the party will come back and this will be our first back-to-back term in Government.

Collet Montejo is the PUP's standard bearer in Cayo Central. Montejo will be contesting Rene Montero for that constituency come March 7th. Montejo says that the support has been strong both from the young and old.

Collet Montejo, Contesting Cayo Northeast
My name is Collet Montero and I am the standard bearer for the PUP in the Cayo Central constituency. It is great to be enjoying this Nomination Day; the support is strong from both the young and the old. We are excited about the prospects of victory in Cayo Central come March 7th. Our concentration just after Elections Day is on the youth. We need to give the young people the opportunity to actually survive and help our people to be able to gain their own wealth and teach our people to make their own money; we need to create industries in Cayo Central and move the constituency forward - that is our plan.

Marcel Bedran, the Independent aspirant for Cayo North, says that he has been doing the work on the ground and that the people in Cayo North supports him.

Marcel Bedran, Contesting Cayo Northeast
I have been going door to door visitations and I believe that any leader or anyone who wants to run in a political position, must go door to door and find out from the people what their cries are. In the Cayo North constituency, people are not asking for much; it’s simple needs and this is what we have to address, that it is simple needs of the people. However, the door to door campaign is the most important one, not the flags, not the banners, not the TV commercials, but going one on one and meeting the people. Today is very historical day because it marks the beginning of the end of the two party system in this country. A third group of people have formed a coalition called the Belize Unity Alliance and we are standing up and we are going forward one step at a time.

Bedran will be going up against UDP's Salvador Fernandez and Joseph Mahmud of the PUP.
