Football Federation of Belize holds elections despite concerns from Ministry of Sports
On Friday the Ministry of Sports issued a press release expressing its concern with the insistence of the Football Federation of Belize to proceed with elections of its executive body over the weekend. Despite these concerns, Dr. Bertie Chimillio and his executive body carried on with their elections. When our cameras visited the FFB compound on Saturday, the elections were being carried out under heavy police security.
Sergio Chuc, Chairman of the Belize Premier Football League, along with different supporters from the football arena, joined arms together in front of the FFB compound over the weekend, voicing their disagreement with Dr. Chimillio’s decision. Sergio Chuc tells us more. Chuc also shared his thoughts on his candidacy having being turned down by the Football Federation of Belize. Lionel Welch, Executive Member of the BPFL and a delegate who was supposed to be present at the elections, was denied access to the FFB compound on Saturday. Welch told us that what is being done is illegal. He calls Chimillio’s endorsement a joke and another blow for Belizean football. As a result of Saturday’s elections, the president of the FFB remains, Dr Bertie Chimilio. Senior Vice President is Bernaldino Pech, Vice President is Mr David Jones, and members are John Moody and Michael Peyrefitte.
The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Council stated that they will only recognize and admit membership of those who are properly elected as per approved constitutions and statutes that respect the democratic process.
