Afternoon shooting leaves one dead

On Wednesday afternoon there was a shooting incident in Belize City on North Front Street at its junction with an alley known as Eden Site. One person was apparently shot dead and another injured, reportedly by police, around 2:15.

Details are sketchy at this point, but we understand that a young man was apparently shot in the alley and police chased his alleged attacker and shot him in the leg.

Since police have released no official details, we will refrain from calling the name of the alleged attacker, but we have obtained an interview with a sister who denies that he had anything to do with what happened.

She explains her version of events, including a major accusation against police.

“When I hear the gunshot, I ran. When I ran out I reached before everybody. I heard the gunshot and I ran and a person said they done shot him, they done shot him, he’s on the ground in the corner.”

Reporter

“Who said that?”

Diane Lino

“One of the police, and the two police went around by where the house is. So I ran and when I realised, it’s my brother. The police took a gun from his side and said he has this.”

Reporter

“You saw the police that the gun out from his side and put it on your brother?”

Diane Lino

“That’s right, he put it on the ground by the lamppost, then he picked it up with a piece of stick.”

Reporter

“And said it was for your brother?”

Diane Lino

“Yes and my brother just left me 5 minutes ago. He told me was going to go buy 2 cigarettes.”

The accused’s sister goes on to insist that her brother, now recovering in the hospital, has said nothing either way regarding his actions, but she does not believe he was involved.

Reporter

“Do you know where he got shot?”

Diane Lino

“I don’t know.”

Reporter

“Why would you say he was running away from the police officers?”

Diane Lino

“Because my brother never goes back there.”

Reporter

“Did you see your brother at the hospital?”

Diane Lino

“Yes.”

Reporter

“What did he tell you?”

Diane Lino

“He’s not talking, he can’t do anything”

Reporter

“Any reason why police was in the area?”

Diane Lino

“Just circling and I don’t know why they would shoot my brother.”

The family is from Dangriga and visiting their mother in Belize City. Our interviewee explained that she attempted to intervene to stop the police from assaulting her brother.

Police are yet to release any information about the incident.
