Andrew Bennett to be extradited

Belizean Attorney Andrew Bennett  is one step closer to being extradited. Yesterday, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Wilfred Elrington signed off on the extradition file sent by the US State Department. Bennett is to face charges for allegedly laundering 250 thousand US dollars even though he was told it was the proceeds of drug sales belonging to Colombian and Puerto Rican drug trafficking organizations. Minister Elrington spoke on the matter today.vlcsnap-2018-01-12-18h54m20s753 vlcsnap-2018-01-12-15h43m18s531

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Wilfred Elrington :

I did sign the documents requesting formal procedure to be commence for the extradition. There’s not much more to say. I signed it on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting. Actually that is a really matter for the magistrate when it goes there. This is really a formal request made and there’s not much I could do with respect to that. I am like a post office almost in that regard but the question as to the propriety of the request that will be dealt with at the magistrate’s sales. I did not really put any weight concentration into that issue. It’s really as far as I’m concern it’s really a formality for now. The minister is required to sign the documents. I have singed them and sent them.

Minister Elrington was asked what kind of timeline is in place for Bennett to be extradited

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Wilfred Elrington :

We would imagine that they would of worked on them certainly this week try to get it moving something that is pending I think this matter is pending before the Christmas holidays began. So it’s about time they move with it now and I imagine they will proceed to deal with it as they should.

The next step in the extradition process would be for the Attorney General’s Ministry to take the case to the Chief Magistrate for the issuance of a provisional warrant.
