There has been a murder conviction in today’s Supreme Court session. 37 year old Andrew Willoughby was found guilty of the murder of 11-year-old David Matura Jr. Convictions are rare in Belize. This June session of the Supreme Court alone has seen more than five persons walk free from murder; but today, Justice Marilyn Williams handed down the guilty verdict. The little boy was killed on May 21, 2012 when Willoughby and another rivalry gang had a shoot-out on Central American Boulevard that morning. Willoughby was seen by police officers pulling out a gun and firing shots at well-known criminal figure, Brandon Taylor and another man. However, Willoughby missed his intended target and hit 11-year-old Daniel Matura Junior twice, one bullet hitting the heart and the other his hand. Justice Marilyn Williams has deferred sentencing for July 17, 2018, when she will hear mitigation plea on his behalf by his attorney, Leroy Banner.
