Armed Guatemalans threaten to burn down Conservation outpost in Chiquibul

There are reports of illegal Guatemalan incursions into Belizean territory allegedly occurring on Friday morning.

Reports are that a Belizean Conservation outpost inside the Chiquibul Forest Reserve was breached by a mob of armed Guatemalans.

Construction work is currently being done there by Belizeans at the Valentin site for the group Friends for Conservation and Development.

It has been reported that around 40 armed men from a small village along the Belize Guatemala border entered Belizean territory and threatened the construction workers saying that they would burn down the outpost if the Belizeans continue to build it there; on Belizean soil.

We have been told that the construction workers were being escorted by Belize Defence Force soldiers when they were accosted by the men. We are following the story and will have more for you as soon as more information is available.
