Bangladeshis in Belize mark national day

This morning in Belize City, the newly formed Bangladesh Association of Belize hosted a small flag raising ceremony in downtown at the Battlefield Park to mark their homeland’s national day. Bangladesh, formerly East Bengal, broke away from neighboring India and Pakistan following intense civil war on the Indian subcontinent.  In 2001 eight Bangladeshi migrated to Belize to live and since then their community has grown to just about 150 residents. Association Member Fakhul Alamsalim spoke to his people’s struggle for independence and self-determination. Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley was in attendance and told us that though small in number the Bangladeshi in Belize have contributed to the business sector over the years.
