Members of the Belmopan Active Youths also known as BAY got down and dirty earlier today and spent their Friday cleaning up the Independence Park in Belmopan. Project Director for the Belmopan Active Youths Sharlette Lopez, explained to us that today’s clean up on the park is no random clean up. She explains that the groups aim is to fully renovate the Park and make it as functional as possible.
“Today, about eleven youths from the Belmopan Active Youths, came out to continue to work on the Independence Park, we have been working on t he parks for two months now. Our aim is to fully rehabilitate the park and make it as functional as possible. It is not to see it as a house park, but a fully functional and active park; today what we date was continue work on the playhouse and we also got involved in cleaning up…to ensure it looks very attractive. We are hoping to engage members from the business community to ensure that our plans for the park in that we really see Independence Park as a fully functional park”.
Surely one of the primary aims of many youth groups is to get young people out of the street by giving them something productive to do. However, morals like these are better learned through first hand experiences. Incidentally enough, that is just the kind of lesson that these youths got earlier today. Lopez explains:
Ms. Sharlette Lopez: “Incidentally and interestingly, not while our youths were out there cleaning and being engaged, two policemen came by and had a little altercation with two young men that were just loitering along the area. Our president intervened and as a result of that it was maybe that they were probably not arrested, but it was simply relate to the fact that they could simply be hanging out there and getting in trouble as opposed to being engage and actively pursue something positive. So, to me, that was an ideal scenario, so to speak”.
The cleanup of the park continues tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. Young men and women in Belmopan City are encouraged to join this program and become engaged in positive change around the community.
