A leaked document on salaries paid to the BDF in 2009 has caused even more questions regarding the use of National Defense funds for sporting purposes. A BDF recruit starting salary is somewhere around $900 dollars a month. Meanwhile football players who play for BDF, but were just civilians, apparently got more pay to play football, than the soldiers did for protecting the nation. According to the documents, salaries to BDF football players who are not BDF soldiers, amounted to almost $50,000 dollars over a period of two months. It also included payments to football coaches for football training periods. These payouts for sporting activities were done at the time when Carlos Perdomo was the Minister of Defense. As we have reported, in recent weeks, attention has been brought to the use of National Defense assets for private sporting interest when it was discovered that Minister of Defense John Saldivar was ferrying his private basketball team to the islands on Coast Guard vessels at the Coast guard’s expense. The latest revelations, including the 2009 pay sheet , suggest very liberal use of already scarce resources and limited budget for Belize’s Defence Force. The media has been trying to reach the former Minister of Defense, Carlos Perdomo and the current one, John Saldivar , for comments, but to no avail.
