As Belizeans adjust to the new statutory instrument that restricts our own people from traversing the Sarstoon River, the Guatemalan fishermen and Guatemalan Army boats still have free, unimpeded access to the entire Sarstoon. In fact, as revealed in a video on Channel 5’s newscast on Thursday night, the Guatemalan Army vessels have no issue with coming up to the Belize mainland at the Forward Operating Base at the mouth of the Sarstoon and aggressing the BDF stationed there. The incident happened on March twelfth and has led to the demotion of some of the BDF soldiers. According to Channel 5’s report, the BDF soldiers are being reprimanded for lack of proper attire at the time of the confrontation. Reports are that the officers had only just arrived at the location from Barranco and were drenched as a result of the rough seas. The commanding officer had allowed his men what is known in military parlance as an admin; that is, permission for them to remove their gears and freshen up. It was reportedly at this time that the Guatemalan Armed Forces came into Belizean territory to where they were stationed.
