Late this evening, the Christian Workers Union sent a press release expressing their solidarity with the members of the sister union the Belize Energy Workers Union BEWU and called on its own members to be ready to show visible support for the members of BEWU. However, that might not be necessary at all, because late this evening, we got a press release from BEL Cooperate communications saying that an agreement has been made which will be signed this evening at the Labor Minister’s office in Belmopan. We will read the press release verbatim. it says, and we quote,
“Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and the Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) have reached points of agreement on negotiations of salaries and benefits, subject to ratification by both parties later this evening. The Prime Minister of Belize this afternoon intervened to mediate the process and held discussions with BEL and the BEWU, with the aim of reaching a compromise. The Company is hopeful that a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed this evening by both parties at a meeting scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Ministry of Labour in Belmopan. This should pave the way for completion of negotiations for a revised Partnership Collective Agreement in the coming weeks.”
We will have more details for you in tomorrow’s newscast.
