Yesterday, the country experienced a mass blackout when customers in the Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts were without power for three hours. BEL says this was caused by a system interruption at the West Lake Substation, that is between Mollejon and San Ignacio Town, at about 5:00 in the evening. The company rectified the situation by isolating Mollejon from the national grid and power was restored around 8:00. Having disconnected from its hydro source, the country’s power is now being supplied by the Gas Turbine generating unit at West Lake, Belize Cogeneration Energy Limited and Mexico’s Comision Federal de Electricidad. The company apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this unplanned power outage in the Western and Southern Zones.
