Belize City Council celebrates first anniversary of election

vlcsnap-2013-03-05-18h36m12s32Belize City Council is marking its first anniversary of election with a week of activities. Today, the Council hosted a special luncheon at Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly. Mayor Darrell Bradley spoke to PLUS News on why they chose this location.

Darrell Bradley – Belize City Mayor:
vlcsnap-2013-03-05-18h36m20s132When we reflected on what we wanted to do for our one year anniversary, service was an important component. So we as a body chose one community service project and we chose to come to the Sister Cecilia’s Home to share a meal with them in the afternoon and just to sit down and spend some time with them. I met Mr. Webster who worked with the City Council coincidentally for twenty three years. So I am learning that they have a lot of value in our society and just sitting and sharing their experiences, I have been privileged to be here this afternoon.

According to Bradley the Council wants Belizeans to take a look at what is being done in the City and get involved with their suggestions on how to make things better. The Mayor outlined the rest of the week’s activities.

Darrell Bradley – Belize City Mayor:
The first activity was that we were blessed by going to St. Mary’s Church and we had a church service at 8 o’clock in the morning with our entire staff and all the Councillors. We fellowshipped together and we prayed for the city, our staff and employees and we respected and honoured the value that they gave to the city. I have always maintained that in the city there is no office. The office of Mayor is just as important as the person who picks up garbage on the street and so we marked the first year by doing that service. Today we are doing a community service at Sister Ceclia’s Home. Tomorrow we are going to have an Information Fair in the NICHE parking lot and every single department of the City Council will be there to promote some of the work that they do, so that people can come there and they can get an understanding as to what the function and roles of the City Council is. We will also have a lot of young people; schools have been invited so that we can educate our young people as to the workings of Government. Of course Thursday we are going to have a street naming ceremony and we are also going to have a press conference where we will meet to launch our strategic plan.
