Belize City retiree loses home in fire

A Belize City retiree saw his residence on Casuarina Street go up in smoke and flames late Sunday afternoon, taking everything he owned. The fire was reported around 4:00 p.m. and according to home owner Shedrock McKoy, he believes electricity problems was the cause.

Shedrock McCoy – Home Owner:
vlcsnap-2013-04-08-21h17m05s113I believe it’s my electrical, because about four days ago when I put on the TV, the TV was on but it never come on.
We’ll have to look into it. I believe it’s an electrical thing.

McKoy said one of the houses was not occupied and neither was insured. He had gone outside briefly to get water for his common-law wife and was just coming in when she alerted him to the fire. He told us he cannot fault the Fire Service for its response as there was simply nothing that could be done to save the wooden structure. However, a neighbor told us the Fire Service was not up to the task.

vlcsnap-2013-04-08-21h17m27s71It was like a quarter to four, I smell something like wires.  When I got up and I looked outside, I saw the house in front of me. There was a small fire inside and they tried to rescue the people that was in there. I went back inside to get a sheet for the lady.  By the time I came out the house was completely engulfed in flames.  I called the Fire Service.  The number was busy,  I called 911.  They took a while to respond.  I think their response to the fire was really slow.  When they got out here It was one truck, and by that time the fire was already out of control.

The neighbour added that the dispatcher responding to her call appeared confused as to what was going on and the 90 number for emergencies related to fire was inoperable. McKoy is now staying with his grandniece Ismay Williams, who made a public appeal for assistance:
