Belizeans at home and abroad, today recognize the 53rd birthday of cultural icon, Andy Vivian Palacio, who passed away on January 19, 2008. Born and raised in Barranco Mr. Palacio became a teacher, but later dedicated himself to preserve the Garifuna music and culture. Once a Cultural Ambassador for Belize, Mr. Palacio was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace which prized him the prestigious WOMEX Award in 2007.
Posthumously, in 2008, Palacio was honored with the BBC3 Awards for World Music in the Americas Category. The Andy Palacio Remembrance Committee has organized activities within several communities across the country under the theme: ―Asaruni Lau Gloria; Amiriheina kei Anhelugu” which mean Rising in Glory and Shining like a Star. And so in celebrating the life the much-loved musician, we’d like to end our newscast with a viewing of his famed hit “Watina.” Watina was made collaboration with The Garifuna Collective and directed by Mr. Brent Tombs.
