On Wednesday, March 16th, Belmopan was officially inaugurated as a sustainable and child friendly municipality. The inaugural ceremony was held at the Mae Gordon Field in Belmopan with primary and high school students. The child friendly initiative was formed in September of 2015 and aims towards getting children to speak up for their rights. Councillor Anna Banner Guy was there, who told us what this initiative does for the children and how it helps better the community. Speakers at the event included Deputy Resident Representative for UNDP Karen Bernard, and UNICEF Representative Ivan Yerovi. Yerovi spoke more about the initiative and said that the voice of children are the loudest when it comes to combating issues in their everyday lives. Karen Bernard, Deputy Resident Representative for the UNDP says that she is proud of the children in the community for peaking up and making a difference. Similar to Wednesday’s Belmopan ceremony , an “Acknowledgement Ceremony” will be held in Belize City at the Battlefield Park as they have also been recognized as a sustainable and child friendly Municipality.
