The Belmopan City Council will be presenting the final draft of the Municipal Development Plan, projected for the next 16 years.
The presentation takes place on Thursday October 16th, at the Belmopan Civic Center at 7:00 pm, and all residents of Belmopan are invited.
Simeon Lopez – Mayor of Belmopan
It’s a draft. It’s being presented, and people will have an opportunity to make their comments, and make their suggestions, electronically if possible, so that we can finalize this draft and get implementation.
The Development Plan includes a number of things that will occur in Belmopan. For example; Infrastructure Works, mainly streets and drains; Population Growth; zoning, as Belmopan grows; the Economy of Belmopan; Tourism; and other things that might come up; the aging population; the youth population; how they all will be affected by this growth plan.”
As we told you, the project is designed on a long term perspective far exceeding the short 3 year term of an elected Mayor. It would therefore be the duty of the people, says Mayor Lopez, to ‘hold their feet to the fire’ and ensure his successors stick to the plan.
Mayor Simeon Lopez
“Yes, that is of great concern. That will be up to the public, once the plan is approved by the general populous. It’s almost binding to whichever political is in power, because then the people of Belmopan will make sure that the city grows according to the plan. If they just leave whoever is in the administration to do, or just throw away the plan and do whatever they want, then that’s what they will get.
I’m not talking about legislation here, but we hope that the political parties, whoever gets into power, [will implement it], because we presented it to the political parties as well, to the UDP, to the PUP, and tomorrow we hope that the third parties will be in attendance, to present it to them as well.
So, once it’s accepted, then we hope that they will live by it.”
There will be an open mike session for the public to voice their opinions or concerns at the meeting on Thursday.
Again the meeting starts at 7:00 pm at the Belmopan Civic Center.
