The second phase of the Belize Municipal Development Project is well underway as works are near completion at the Belmopan Civic Center. Apart from the Civic Center and parking lot, which will be occupied by the Tuesday and Friday Market Vendors, phase two of the development project also entails extensive works on the Market area at the Belmopan Market Square and the Bliss Parade.
Deputy Mayor of Belmopan City Council explained.
“What this entails is not just the renovation of the Civic Center and that area which is market day which is actually the parking lot of the Civic Center which is being displaced at the time for renovation. It is also looking at the entire city area and the Garden City Market area which is the original market. That is where the renovations are being done to the resurfacing of the entire parking lot and the Constitution Drive in the vicinity”.
Reporter: “How long will this project be ongoing, as it has caused a little bit of congestion to the traffic”.
Anna Banner Guy: “Well, unfortunately it has some kind of diversion in traffic like you said. That is something that of course, as we all know the old saying, “progress bring a little bit of problem and some challenges. The project is scheduled to open on July 11th. Hopefully by that time, everything will be back to normal”.
Works are also slated to begin on Constitution Drive and Almond Boulevard in the Mountain View area shortly. The project is estimated to cost BZ $417,802.00, which is being funded by the Government of Belize through a World Bank Loan under the Belize Municipal Development Project.
