Belmopan Market is a Parking Lot; Mayor Had No Say

Simeon Lopez,  Mayor of Belmopan, addressed the matters concerned with the controversial Belmopan Tuesday/Friday Market, and the 2.2 million dollar grant given to the Government by the European Union to build a Market.

But before we get into the money matters, we first asked the Mayor to definitively state the boundaries of City Council intervention on the renovations of the Civic Center. The Grant given to the government by the EU was to build a temporary Market, but plans changed according to the Mayor.

He explained that though the Belmopan City Council own the Civic Center and that piece of land, The Belmopan City council had no input in the decision made for the Civic Center

“Contrary to public opinion, the Belmopan City Council did not get any money. We don’t handle those monies.  You need to go there and look at the billboard, which shows the design of that Market.  There is not an emblem or a logo to say that the Belmopan City Council is involved in this renovation. It’s the Ministry of Works and the European Union.

When the original idea  dropped through about building structures for everyday sale, it went dormant for a while, and them the Ministry of Economic Development through the European union came up with another idea.  It wasn’t my idea.  It came out of the idea that let us renovate  this area where they are.

So they engaged an architect from the Ministry of Works to do the design.  The design was approved.  Once the design is approved, the contractor is selected, and the work began.”

Then there is the controversial 2.2 million of which, according to the Mayor, at least 1.9 was allotted for the renovation of the Civic Center.

“As far as I understand, one point nine million dollars was alloted.”

Louis Wade – Host of Rise and Shine

“How much was allotted for Market?”

Mayor Simeon Lopez

“It was two point two.

Louis Wade

“So what we see there, in your knowledge, is one point nine million dollars worth of work.”

Mayor Simeon Lopez

“I can’t tell you that, because I haven’t seen whatever is being given to the contractor”

Louis Wade

“Are you satisfied? One point nine million dollars has been spent in your city, in that location, Mayor.”

Mayor Simeon Lopez

“I don’t know if that was spent, Louis.  I don’t know if it is more.  I don’t know if it is less. I don’t know if it is one point nine.”
