While the first segment of the Belmopan summer camp program has culminated, the second part is just beginning. The sport activities in this segment include of volleyball, basketball and chess, which many people consider a sport. Chess is a game of strategic skills which is played on a checkered board by two players. The players use chess pieces to move across the board capturing the opponents pieces within specific rules. The object of the game is to put the opponents king under direct attack making it impossible to move- checkmate. We spoke to Erwin Wills, one of the chess instructors and also a member of the Chess Association who shared his purpose in volunteering to train the kids
Erwin Wills – Chess instructor:
I’ve been a member of the Chess Association for five years, and now I feel it’s time for me to give back. It feels good to help the kids, knowing that I have something to do for the Summer, other than being bored at home. Since they have started yesterday they have learned a lot. By next week I’m sure they’ll be ready.
Akeem Jenkins another Chess instructor spoke of what they are training for
Akeem Jenkins – Chess instructor:
Chess is a mental game of patient strategy, and the kids understood that very well. It’s challenging game, but the kids seem more than excited about it.
