Bi-Election or “Buy” Election

Allegations of voter buy outs usually surface after the hype of every election. Yesterday’s bi-elections were no different.  Even before the polls closed yesterday there was already talk on the streets of people getting paid to vote for a particular color. But while it is illegal to corrupt the electoral system by paying someone to vote in favor of either candidate there is no substantial evidence to validate these claims, so people usually chalk it down to a case of “sore losers”. Tonight there is another such claim coming from a young lady of Belize City who alleges that she was paid to vote for one of the candidates in the Dangriga bi-elections . Now, by law, you have to be living in a constituency for two months or more before you can transfer your vote. But  this 18 year old woman claims she has never lived in Dangriga and never transferred her vote and was born and raised and lived all her life in Belize City. She recounts her story

“Now, how did you end up in Dangriga ****?”

18 Year Old Votervlcsnap-2015-07-10-10h12m32s175

“They brought me yesterday because they said that we will vote for Papa Mena. They brought all of us from Belize; me , another girl and another boy. When the counting start, the girl started to behave bad. First, the man told us to go and vote and they will give us a hundred dollars.  I didn’t have any pocket so when I got the money, I bought two Red Bulls and two Monsters and I gave the girl my money to hold because I didn’t have any purse… nothing on me. Even my phone I left in Belize and that’s what I shouldn’t have done. When we reached here, the man said that we should just vote and they will give us $100. We voted and everything and they told me to take off (the ink) with nail polish remover. This finger right here because I am not suppose to vote here,  I am suppose to vote in Belize. They explained that to me from I reach.  You know what ****  said? They told **** that **** said to go into the booth. I placed the vote and I came out back. The Spanish lady didn’t want me to go in, then they called **** and he said to go into the polling station to go vote and I went in…. right after he told them to go in.”

“Did they call your name out?”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes.”

Louis Wade

“Was it your correct name that they called out?”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes. Everything.”

Louis Wade

“They called your name and  you show your I.D?”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes.”

Things seemed to go from bad to worse for the 18 year old woman whose identity has been concealed.  After she missed the last bus back to Belize City and was, according to her, pushed out of a vehicle and later ended up in police detention,  she was allegedly abused by police.

“Now being 18 years old and being in Dangriga, how did you manage to get out of police?”vlcsnap-2015-07-10-10h12m24s89 - Copy

18 Year Old Voter

“Because I told them my step-father  will come for me as sun rise.”

Louis Wade

“So they were afraid? Did you tell them who is your step-father?”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes.”

Louis Wade

“Do they know your step-father?”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes.”

The woman who was part of the group of party supporters who came from Belize City,  said there was heavy drinking involved during yesterday’s bi-elections, something completely forbidden by law.

18 Year Old Voter

“They same alcohol, they brought the alcohol.”

Louis Wade

“They who?”

18 Year Old Voter

The same man, **** and them in their car. They brought it from Belize because the lady wasn’t selling any liquor. Not even stout or beer the lady was selling. She did not want to sell. They went all the way to Griga too and came back with rum.”

Louis Wade

“They went all the way to Dangriga Town and bring back the alcohol because you were at Hope Creek.”

18 Year Old Voter

“Yes. They left me and the girl to sit down, that I was with. They went to Dangriga Town and bring back about six or seven quarts and then came back. Then I saw them go into a little shop place that was there. I said that I wasn’t going to fool with that.”

These happenings sound all too sensational especially coming from an 18 year old who has probably never voted anywhere else other than the last municipal elections; so we questioned her sincerity.

Louis Wade

Now, people are listening and they are saying **** we know you and are a liar. You are telling a lie.”

18 Year Old Voter

“Never. I don’t need to tell any lie. I am not from up here so worst I don’t need to tell any lies. I vote here. Up here. I don’t even know what’s the name of the place.”

All names mentioned by the young woman of those allegedly facilitating the purchase of her vote have been sensored as we have no proof to validate her claims. The only thing we have been able to independently verify from an eyewitness is that the young woman was indeed slapped and fell off the truck as a result. According to the witness, the young woman appeared intoxicated at the time and police did detain her.
