The Referendum Act of Belize, No. 1 of 2008 requires that sixty percent of registered electors must participate for a referendum to be valid. However in December 2016, there was an amendment made to the Referendum law, where only 50 percent of registered voters are needed to hold a referendum. When the National House of Representative convenes on Friday, January 13, the amendment to the Referendum Act is scheduled to pass into law. In a press release, Belize Territorial Volunteer (BTV) informed the media that they are scheduling a protest outside while the meeting is on in the House. The BTV says it feels the need to have this protest in order to demonstrate their displeasure with the manner in which the government is handling Guatemala’s claim and said that the government did not consult the Belizean people on the amendment to the referendum.
