Primary and High school students and customers at Builder’s Hardware were treated to exciting performances by a Garifuna Dance Group and the legendary paranda musician Mr. Paul Nabor. This is the month for the celebration of the Garinagu. Over the years the celebrations have grown from an event centered on the 19th of November, to several weeks of cultural festivities. Today the air was alive within the City of Belmopan as Garifuna drummers and dancers moving in rhythm to the symphony of the vibrant drumbeat; their voices carrying the echo of chants passed down from generation to generation. The Builders Hardware compound was the scene of this marvelous cultural presentation and Plus news got a chance to speak with Mrs. Shelly Usher who is the Director of Builders Hardware.
Ms. Shelly Usher- Garifuna Event Coordinator of Builder’s Hardware
“We have been having the Garifuna Drummers Buitiacefi on the 19th November for the last five years or so because I like the Garifuna music and I lke the Garifuna culture. So, for me, it’s just fun to hear the music and to see the people get excited. For the last two years. We have been inviting Mr. Paul Nabor and that is when it came to us that we need to invite the schools, so that the kids can have the opportunity to meet him. He’s aging; he is about 85 years old and we don’t know how much longer he will be sitting and healthy enough out here singing for the children and so we started to invite the schools and it was very well accepted by them…all the schools bringing their children every year. It’s a big event for us”.
