Bus operators fined for overcrowded buses

The Department of Transport has taken nine bus drivers to court. On Friday June 16, in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court, the nine drivers pleaded guilty to the offences. Seven of them were charged for “carrying excessive passengers on a public service vehicle” while two were charged for “failure to provide road service permits”. All nine and were fined $200.00 plus $5.00 cost of court for each offence, in default 2 months imprisonment. The Department of Transport says it is cracking down on the overcrowded busses which risk the safety of passengers. Transport Department says it will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those drivers and other road users who do not comply with the rules of the road and other Traffic Laws of Belize.
