This morning representatives of Belize Water Services Limited (BWS) and the Belize Water Services Workers Union (BWSWU) signed a new collective bargaining agreement before Labour Commissioner, Ivan Williams. The joint press release is short on details of the agreement but says it is retroactive to November 1, 2015 and is an improvement on the original, recognizing the importance of a motivated workforce and fair work practices. It emphasizes that the two sides worked cooperatively and tirelessly to finish the agreement so that it could be reviewed and approved by Commissioner Williams. The company and union were as recently as a year or so ago rent apart by internal allegations of inappropriate behaviour by staff and management in the matter of a series of salacious letters circulated around the Central American Boulevard compound. Six workers were let go by the company in what it referred to as a belt-tightening exercise but the workers believed they were targeted unfairly and have sued the company in court. That matter is pending judgment.
