CARSI Donates ten New Motorcycles for Belize Police

vlcsnap-2013-02-08-18h57m29s153CARSI donated motorcycles to Police today. Last June the Police Department received a big boost in its crime fighting capabilities in the City with the donation of ten trucks from the Central American Regional Security Initiative (CARSI), a partnership between Central America and the United States of America. Today they came through with another big donation. This time it was ten Honda motorcycles valued at $41,000. CARSI program specialist working out of the US Embassy in Belmopan is Barry Cuthbertson.

BARRY CUTHBERTSON – CARSI program specialist:
vlcsnap-2013-02-08-19h18m32s234We’ve noticed since June last year, a donation of ten trucks to the Police Department, for use directly here in Belize City, the ability for the Police to respond to crime and apprehend criminals had greatly increased. So based on that success we’re continuing donation of vehicles to allow the Police to quickly respond to the incidents of crime

Eastern Divisions’ Assistant Commissioner Miguel Segura, says that the donation comes at a much needed time

MIGUEL SEGURA – Eastern Divisions’ Assistant Commissioner:
vlcsnap-2013-02-08-19h05m10s141How we plan to utilize them is for the City. Some of then would be here, and then also for the rural areas, because we’ve seen types of violent crimes moving in those villages. So the consensus here is to have some to be kept within the city, and some to be moved to the rural areas

And according to Cuthbertson, they are keeping a close eye on the upkeep of the transport, while commending its use as the reason more arrests are taking place:

BARRY CUTHBERTSON – CARSI program specialist:
The United States Embassy does an annual review of everything we donate to the Police Department, and we work on a regular basis of receiving reporting that would indicate that vehicles being used for its proper use, and that the vehicles having success.  The success stories help us formulate and work our strategy, so that we are more efficient being a partner with Belize on fighting crime.

While some of the motorcycles will stay in Belize City, others will be sent out to the district outposts.
