Cashier at Dangriga Magistrate’s court charged with theft

A Belizean cashier at the Dangriga magistrate’s court has been charged with theft. Belizean Finance Officer for the Attorney General’s Office/Magistrates Court  reported that whilst conducting an internal audit at the Dangriga Magistrates Court, she discovered that, on August 26th of 2016, a payment of $300.00 was made and was issued a receipt which was signed and stamped by  Janay Ciego, the cashier at the Dangriga Magistrates Court. However, a further investigation revealed that only $2.50 cents was paid into the Treasury Department using the specific receipt number. Likewise in July of that same year, a payment of $4000 was made at the Dangriga Magistrates Court where a government receipt was issued, again signed and stamped by Janay Ciego. However, only four dollars was paid into the Treasury Department using the specific receipt number. The funds from both transactions could not have been accounted for and so police arrested and charged 32 year old Janay Ciego with two counts of Theft.
