Cayo Police Investigates the Murder of a Honduran National

vlcsnap-2014-05-29-19h31m37s6The body of a Honduran national identified as 28 year old Oscar Armando Gomez Alvarez was reportedly found in the outskirts of a village in the District of Cayo, called Los Tambos.

According to reports, Alvarez has not been in Belize very long. Sources say he arrived in the village of Los Tambos some two weeks ago asking for a job and a place to stay. Villagers told us that apparently he did manage get a place to stay. However, on Sunday, May 18th, he was reportedly attacked.

For reasons unknown, he never reported it to police. That same night, reports are that he arrived at a farm land on the outskirts of the village where the Godoy family reside.

After begging them for lodging, the family allowed him to stay in a nearby hut.  Ruth Godoy explained she barley saw him during the day and knew little of him:

“Until he came out of the hospital, he came back again to flee away because it seems that he was feeling a bit scared in the village where he got chopped.  He had already been staying here for a few days, but I didn’t know him that well because he was only here in the night because he had asked that he just wanted a little space to sleep.  So, on Tuesday, he went out and around 6:00 a. m., he came here to drink some coffee with some bread, supposedly to work.  He then returned around 10 at night and went inside the house.  I never saw him again until the following evening.  When my kids returned from school, one of the smaller kids went inside the house and saw him lying there and came to notify me.  I went to check and I realized he was dead”.

He was discovered dead a week after being discharged from the Western Regional hospital. The family relayed the information to the village chairman who then made an official report to police. Inspector Raymundo Reyes, Deputy Commanding officer of San Ignacio Police, gave us details of the investigation.

“On Wednesday 28  May, 2014, acting on information received at about 5 p. m. the San Ignacio Police visited a house at a farm located at about a mile from the outskirt of Los Tambos village, Cayo district, where the male body of a male person identified as Oscar Armando Gomez Alvarez,27 years old, a Honduran national, was seen lying on his bed on a face-up position.  Police also observed that the body had what appeared to be cut wounds on the left side of the head, face and shoulder”.

Reporter Emanuel Pech:  “What is the police suspecting right now?  Do you suspect that he died because of these injuries or what is the investigation revealing so far?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes:  “That is the reason why we are waiting for the results of the post mortem examination to see if it was caused as a result of the chop injuries- because sometimes it could be heart attack or something else”.

vlcsnap-2014-05-29-21h56m22s202We were told that the post mortem was to be concluded sometime this evening. As for the person that inflicted the cut wounds that put Alvarez in the Hospital, Police say they are still looking for him.

Reporter Emanuel Pech:  “Do you have any leads as to whom might have inflicted these wounds to the person?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes:  “All we know is that the person is a Honduran national; the name of the person is unknown to us the police, but with the assistance of the community, we are making checks in the Los Tambos and the Spanish Lookout areas for a male person who is a 5′.8″ in height, slim built, and dark skin complexion”.

vlcsnap-2014-05-29-21h50m54s106Reporter Emanuel Pech:  “Does the Police have any motives for the chop wounds that he received?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes:  “Not at this moment”.

According to police, they have contacted the Honduran Consulate in Belize which is now working on identifying the relatives of 28 year old Oscar Armando Gomez Alvarez who’s cause of death is yet unknown.
