44-year old Richard Allen Garcia, a resident of Chunox Village, was shot and killed by Police just before 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening in his yard just next to the E and R Grocery Store. According to residents nearby, while they were unsure of what happened in the yard, they heard a barrage of shots fired with three of them hitting the grocery store and another two hitting the store owner’s truck. Richard Garcia lived alone and sold bottles for a living as well as doing odd jobs in the community. Neighbors say that Garcia was a quiet person and don’t understand why the four policemen who went to his house would find it necessary to shoot and kill him. Today, police issued a statement saying that Garcia had received permission to live in a house that he was occupying but the owners have since indicated that they now have use of the home and had asked Garcia to evacuate it. However, Garcia refused to leave. According to police reports, police went to the home of Garcia in an effort to evict him from the house. At this point, Garcia emerged from the home with a machete and attacked one of the police officers. Several warning shots were reportedly fired at Garcia in an effort to dissuade him from attacking, but to no avail. Police officers say they then fired at Garcia, who was hit to the chin, neck and right collar bone. He died at the scene with many neighbors looking on as police removed his body from the yard. Police investigations continue.
