News that the Government and specifically Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie intended to file an appeal of the writ of mandamus granted by Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin in March outraged supporters of the effort to oust and shame ex-Minister of State Elvin Penner.
On Friday, the Prime Minister clarified that what is being sought is clarification. As for Penner, he and the UDP, Barrow says, have parted ways.
Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow: “I think that is based on the Solicitor General’s view that it was a decision that went too far, and that clarification from a higher court is necessary in terms of the future, in matter of what its precedents at it”.
Reporter: “What is your relationship now, between the Party and Elvin Penner?”
Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow: “Well, if you know that in April 30th is the closing date for applications for those who want to contest to become the UDP”s new candidate in the Cayo Northeast constituency, you can’t have greater evidence of the fact that we are moving on; we have moved on”.
