A man was shot and killed by Coast Guard officers on Monday December 15, in the area of Bacalar Chico about 21 ½ miles North of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.
According to police reports, about 75 meters from the beach side in the bushes, a sawed off 12 gauge pump action shotgun and (6) 12 gauge cartridges were found. About 25 feet from the shotgun was the body of 23-year-old Peter Castillo Jr. of Indian Ville Village, Punta Gorda Town. He was found lying face up with apparent gunshot wounds to his body. Beside him was a knapsack and a black sweater.
According to the police, at about 10:48a.m., a team of Coast Guard Personnel, comprising of 6 persons, were in the area conducting operations, when they came across 3 men who were armed at the time. They were ordered to drop their weapons and one of the men reportedly raised his shotgun and pointed it in the Coast Guards’ direction. The Coast Guard personnel responded by firing 3 shots in the armed man’s direction, fatally wounding Mr Castillo.
Peter Castillo received injuries to the left side of his chest, his right elbow and left upper arm. His body was transported to the K.H.M.H. morgue where it awaits a post mortem examination.
The knapsack was searched where an additional (7) 12 gauge cartridges were found and a small white bottle containing suspected cannabis. The shotgun was retrieved and observed to be a 12 gauge Pump Action Shotgun Maverick Model 88 which had a piece of the butt cut off. One M4 Carbine Riffle was also retrieved from Coast Guard personnel for testing.
Police investigations continue.
