COLA Pleased with Sarstoon Base

vlcsnap-6507-02-16-01h24m00s386Last week it was announced by Minister of National Security John Saldivar that next Wednesday, December 9, there would be ground-vlcsnap-5809-12-27-04h45m27s327breaking in the Toledo District for a joint Forward Operating Base overlooking the Sarstoon River. The base is to be manned by both the Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard.  In the last few months, as Guatemala and its unfounded claim to Belize has become a serious issue, the necessity for a base in the area has been trumpeted by the Belize Territorial Volunteers, who openly confronted Guatemalan navy personnel while attempting to visit Sarstoon Island in August, and their partners, including Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA). Today president Geovannie Brackett claimed another victory with the Government’s announcement.

Geovannie Brackett, President COLA: When we went down to the Sarstoon we realized that we had to break down the advocacy to a specific issue. It was not just to take trips to the border and so we selected that issue of building the base and so we are happy that the government and now the Coast Guard and the BDF will now build a joint operating base there.
