The United Nations Regional Center for Peace, Disarmament & Development in Latin America & the Caribbean (UNLIREC) is sponsoring an Inter-Institutional Training Course in Combating Illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives for members of the Belize Police Department. Supt. of Police Linden Flowers spoke to the media about the training.

Linden Flowers – Supt. of Police:
vlcsnap-2013-02-25-19h39m18s60We just opened an Inter-Institutional Training Course for Police Officers and other law enforcement agencies, to deal with and review best practice under the UN Charter with illicit firearms and ammunition trafficking. We will be having facilitators from Canada, and from the International Red Cross Organization, ICRC, that have seen and done work in areas prone to firearm use, like the Middle East and down in South America and other Central American countries.  Those use for reduction of firearms will be brought to bear on Belize, and hopefully we will be able to adapt and achieve some of their successes.

The inter-sectoral training is seeking to create a wider network within the different Police Departments, Customs and Immigration, the Belize Defense Force, and The National Coastguard, among other institutions in identifying illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives in Belize.

We are endeavoring to address it by bringing in the agencies that are working in our frontiers and the different areas, to be able to recognize how firearms are trafficked, to be able to recognize the ammunition and explosives that are trafficked, so that they, in their environment or in their area of work, can be a force multiplier for the primary law enforcement of Police.

The  course will take place at the National Police Training Academy which will run for two weeks, from February 25 to March 8, 2013.
