Commissioner of Police recognizes the importance of the media

Today the Police Department’s senior command was in Belize City for its latest strategy meeting – on relations with the press. They have not always been the best, but Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie says the Department recognizes the importance of the media in Belize.

Allen Whylie – Commissioner of Police:
vlcsnap-2013-05-15-20h18m22s163I have always seen the media as a friend and ally. That has not always been seen by individual officer, but I think at the administrative level we recognize that they media can make you and the media can break you. We need to strike that balance, because as I said, the greatest medium to get out the positive work that we are doing is through the media and so we have got to find better ways to harness that to ensure that our message is put out there.

According to Commissioner Whylie, the Department’s regional commanders and formation and deputy formation commanders will now be allowed to speak with the press on matters of clarification and additional information, forming a second layer to the Department’s official press officer.

Allen Whylie – Commissioner of Police:
vlcsnap-2013-05-15-20h18m42s103I think that at this point in time, I am looking at the Regional Commanders to be at the forefront in terms of passing and disseminating the work of the Police in those regions, that will not stop the formation Commanders who have the day to day administrative and operational responsibility to also share information with the media. Definitely I am looking at the existing media policy with a view to update it. We will in the near future be having meeting with the media because it is not like getting the perspective form the media that we can try to adapt to ensure that we co-exist and collaborate effectively.

The Department’s media policy will also be updated and in the near future there will be direct meetings with the press on matters of police and crime coverage.
