There was a small traffic accident in Orange Walk town yesterday. As we have reported, the Immigration Department says they are now fully enforcing laws as it pertains to border crossings. This came after a police mobile was seen loading up at an Orange Walk unofficial crossing in Botes area of Orange Walk district. Shortly after that, customs had a high speed chase where they were trying to stop a police vehicle that they suspected was transporting contraband items. This was a separate incident where a back was tossed from the police vehicle during the chase. . Following these border crossing lawlessness by police officers, the Immigration Department decided to clamp down on the Botes border crossing. However, as the old adage goes, where there is a will, there is a way. On Tuesday, a customs check point was at Yo Creek and a white Isuzu pick-up truck approached the checkpoint but refused to stop. This led to a high speed chase with customs, ending all the way in Orange Walk town when the pickup slammed into a concrete fence post. The driver of the vehicle jumped out with a black plastic bag in his hand. Police believe that bag had in illicit drugs of some kind. The “Contrabandista” managed to escape but police have impounded the vehicle which contained sacks of white onions and potatoes. Police are now looking for the owner of the vehicle as their investigation continues.
