Contract Signed for Belmopan Ring Road Upgrading

Two contracts were signed on Wednesday at the Ministry of Works and Transport in Belmopan, as part of the Road Safety Project headed by the Ministry of Economic Development, co-funded by the Government of Belize and the Caribbean Development Bank.

Yvonne Hyde, CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development says this project is the first of its kind in the region.

“This is the first project of its kind that the bank is funding.  The hope of the bank is, and I think we support that intention fully, to show the rest of the Caribbean how road users can share roads efficiently and safely.

So Belize is being used as an example, so to speak, of how road safety features can be incorporated into roads/streets in the Caribbean.

So I think we are very happy to be, in a way, the Guinea-pig.”

According to Hon John Salidvar, Area Representative for Belmopan, he included this project in his 2008 manifesto with some reluctance, due to the complexity of the project, and says it pleases him to see it finally coming to fruition.

“[It has taken seven years] for this project to become a reality, and I am especially pleased, because of the fact that those who wrote that manifesto, who shall remain nameless for now, have played a crucial role in ensuring that this is one project that the people of Belmopan will get, and will get the opportunity to enjoy.”
