Cop and city man charged with attempted murder

A sworn police officer and another Belize City man have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison, accused of the vlcsnap-2016-07-19-12h20m11s167 vlcsnap-2016-07-19-12h20m30s102Thursday, July 14, 2016 attempted murder of 29 year old Nigel Castillo who was shot once in the abdomen whilst socializing near a basketball court in the Saint Martin de Porres area. 19 year old Constable Wallace Meighan, of Mahogany Street Extension, Belize City, along with 21 year old Travaun Chee, a self-employed construction worker, are charged jointly with attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm with a firearm upon Nigel Castillo and aggravated assault with a firearm upon Gilbert Arana. Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer denied bail since the offenses is said to have occurred with the use of a firearm. Meighan and Chee return to court on September 7, 2016. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, the shooting is not believed to be gang related but was triggered by an altercation which took place on the basketball court earlier that evening.
