Corozal man drowns while fishing in Turneffe Island

A fisherman of Corozal has drowned as a result of a fishing trip during the heavy rains experienced over the weekend. On Saturday the 18th of June, 29-year-old Eugenio Santos Jr., a fisherman of Corozal was with his father 66-year-old Eugenio Santos Sr, a boat captain of Sarteneja Village, along with five other fishermen on Turneffe Island. They were all fishing inside a sailing boat when his father, Eugenio Santos Sr. decided to leave along with two other fishermen in separate canoes. About an hour later, a rainstorm came which prevented Eugenio Jr. from being able meet up with his father. After the rainstorm had stopped, Eugenio Jr. took the boat to go look for his father. After searching for a while, he saw his father’s canoe at a distance with no one inside. When he got closer to the boat, he saw his father in the water with a rope wrapped around his left foot. He immediately took him out and placed him inside the boat and rushed him to shore where he was transported to Belize City and pronounced dead. The body of Eugenio Santos Sr. now awaits a postmortem examination.
