Cyclist knocked down and killed on highway

Andres Diego is dead after being knocked off his bicycle on Sunday evening while on the Hummingbird Highway.  On the 7th of January, police received reports of a Traffic accident that took place between miles 10 and 11 on the Stann Creek Road. In the middle of the road,  the motionless body of 52 year old Andres Phillip Diego Sr. Belizean Laborer of Pomona Village, was seen lying face down. On the right hand side of the road, Diego’s bike could be seen completely destroyed. Some distance away, a silver Honda Civic car was parked on the opposite side of the road. We spoke to the daughter of Diego, who told us about what they heard.vlcsnap-2018-01-09-14h52m34s945 vlcsnap-2018-01-09-14h52m19s723

Daughter:

Yes he left from work about 10 to 7. My mom got the news so she called us. It was so shocking because it was so sudden. The understanding that we got was he was on his way home and he was knocked from behind with a vehicle. The information that we got was it is a coast guard name by David Jerry. He suffered from head injuries, one of his foot the lower part is almost off hanging and I guess other body injuries.

According to police, sometime around 6:30 p.m., Jerry O’Hara David, a 26 year old Belizean Coast Guard, was driving the Honda Civic car from the direction of Dangriga towards Belize City. A vehicle that was coming in the opposite impaired his vision, which caused him to swerve and hit Diego who died on the spot. David was issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution. The family says that there is a constant back and forth between them and the police officers.

Daughter:

Yes we left our number with the guy. He was going to get in contact with us but no feedback and to the understanding that we got the guy was released last night sent home, sleep at home and return back to the cell this morning.

Police are investigating.
