Heavily armed police officers stood around the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court this morning as infamous and alleged “Pastor Killer”, William “Danny” Mason, made his way to court today. As the nation is fully aware, Mason and four other men from Roaring Creek, Ashton Vanegas, Keron Fernandez, Terrence Fernandez, and Ernest Castillo, are accused of the brutal murder of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas. Lucas’ head was discovered in the back of Mason’s vehicle, on ice, in a bucket in July of 2016. The rest of his body was discovered a few days later on Mason’s ranch at mile 31 on the Western Highway. The body was burned to a char. In February of this year, the five men were committed to stand trial in the July session of the Supreme court. Today, the men returned to court for their date for Preliminary Inquiry in the charges of “Kidnapping” and “Conspiracy to commit kidnapping”. That preliminary Inquiry date is set for 12th of June before Magistrate Anderson. The case of William Mason is a high profile one as Lucas’ death led to rallies and demonstrations demanding justice. It was also one of the demands of the BNTU when they went on strike; that an independent investigation be conducted since Mason was tied to several government officials, chief among them the then Minister of Police, John Saldivar. Police have said in previous interviews that they have a solid case against Mason et al, including over a hundred pieces of evidence, witness statements from over 20 prosecution witnesses, video surveillance which reportedly shows the kidnapping of Pastor Lucas and David Dodd, a caution statement from one of the accused men, as well as the head which was found in .
