We have been reporting on the body of a Guatemalan person found in the Chiquibul some two days ago. There have been many conflicting reports as Guatemalan media said it was a Guatemalan Soldier who was killed on the Belizean side. Guatemalan media even showed a picture of the body propped up in a hammock. The Belizean government was slower in releasing information since it was not until 4 p.m yesterday, Wednesday May 17th, that the body was retrieved and flown by helicopter into Belize City for autopsy and investigation. That is what a late evening press release on Wednesday indicated. Following that, information began to trickle out from Belizean authorities that the dead Guatemalan was not a soldier. According to the Belizean version, the civilian did die in the Chiquibul but it appears to be an accident and had nothing to do with the BDF or law enforcement. He has been identified as 18 year old Marvin Cristobal Chac Pop. The Wednesday press release said that the body was retrieved by a joint operation conducted by the Organization of American States (OAS) along with the Belize Defence Force (BDF), Belize Forensic Department and Guatemalan officials. According to information received, the forensic personnel determined that Pop had tumbled down from a cliff and died from injuries to his head when he fell on the stones in a small creek. This happened 7.7 kilometers or 4.7 miles inside Belize. We understand that the Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales has since said on Guatemalan media that the report that a Guatemalan solider was killed in Belize is completely false.
